PENCIL DRAWING TECHNIQUES:

The techniques I use in rendering my pencil drawings are few and simple. Most of my work is done on good quality black paper with some "tooth" (roughness). After deciding on a subject and composition, I roughly sketch in an outline using medium gray pencil, paying particular attention to proportion. When I'm satisfied these are as correct as I can make them, I begin filling in using light strokes, overlapping colors to create shading and a three-dimensional effect. Since I want as much of the "tooth" as possible completely filled in on the paper, it takes as many as twenty layers of color to complete this time consuming process. c004 Leopard Cub 19.5 x 14.5" $375 To me, one of nature’s miracles is the eye of the cat, and thus it becomes a very important part of my drawing. I begin the drawing with an eye, which becomes the focal point from which all the other facial features are brought into alignment. Soft shading builds up the curving volumes in the heavy bodies of the big cats, developing natural modeling and rich color qualities.
c006 A Quiet Moment Tiger and Cub 25" x 19" $1,400 I started out at a young age drawing our own cats, and in time naturally gravitated toward the big cats, becoming mesmerized by their great beauty and grace. Traveling in Africa allowed me to see lions, leopards and cheetahs in the wild firsthand which greatly inspired me artistically

I turn the paper frequently to fill in the paper from all different angles. An electric pencil sharpener is always by my side. To achieve high detail, sharp pencil points are a must. I normally work only a couple of hours at a time, taking frequent breaks to rest my eyes. Gradually the picture emerges - it cannot be rushed. I don't have to force myself to work slowly and carefully; the discipline is automatically there after years of practice.
